Understanding
autism and noise sensitivity
Many autistic people experience sound far more intensely than others do. The National Autistic Society explains that autistic people can be much more, or less, sensitive to sensory experiences, and that over-sensitivity to sound can cause anxiety or even physical pain (National Autistic Society, 2023). It is a real, physical experience, not an overreaction.

Why it happens
sensory processing in autism
Sensory processing is how we take in and respond to information from our senses. In autism, any sense, including hearing, can be over-sensitive (hypersensitive), under-sensitive (hyposensitive), or both at different times. Every autistic person has their own sensory profile: a personal pattern of needs, preferences and sensitivities (National Autistic Society, 2023).
When hearing is over-sensitive, the brain may not filter background sound into the background. A hand dryer, a busy classroom, a humming fridge or several conversations at once can feel sharp, relentless and exhausting, and can build towards overwhelm.

- Covering the ears, or seeking deep quiet after busy times.
- Distress, shutdown or meltdown in loud places like shops, stations or assemblies.
- Avoiding certain rooms, events or appliances.

- In children especially, it is often shown through behaviour rather than put into words.
What can help
adjustments that make a difference
The aim is not to make someone tolerate more noise, but to lower the load and give back a sense of control.
Ear defenders and earplugs
Ear defenders or filtered earplugs can take the edge off without cutting someone off entirely.
Predictability
Warning before loud events, and knowing what to expect, makes sound far easier to manage.
Quiet on purpose
Planned quiet time and a calm space to retreat to can prevent overwhelm building up.
Adjust the environment
Soft furnishings, turning sources off, and choosing quieter times and seats all lower a room's volume.
Settle the moment
Slow breathing in the reset zone, or steady calming sound, can help when things tip.
Believe and allow
Treat the noise as real, and allow the person to leave or lower it without having to justify themselves.
